Guccio Gucci created the House of Gucci in 1906. By 1938 Guccio had expanded to open a boutique in Rome. Guccio was the designer of many of the company's most notable products, including the bamboo handle handbag, and the trademark striped webbing which are still the company mainstays, even to this day. After his death in 1953, Guccio's 3 sons played a role in leading the company to the international scene with the development of fragrances, purses, and accessories. After years of infighting and family squabbles that nearly led to bankruptcy, the company finally turned the business around and by the late 1980's Gucci became one of the world's most influential fashion houses, a brand that is frequently mentioned in pop culture and music and a highly profitable business operation.
